About the artist
Willem van de Velde (II) specializes in marine just like his father. A painter of Dutch descent. Willem was apprenticed to sea painter Simon de Vlieger, at the age of fifteen. Van de Velde was active in Amsterdam where he lived with his family. At the start of his career he painted groups of fishing boats off the coast, with a calm sea. His best work is the painting of the Dutch coast with Dutch shipping.
